Children play in the Plaza Vieja, a centerpiece of the ongoing rehabilitation of the historic quarter of Havana, Cuba.

"You literally feelwith this girl running toward the group of childrenI want to play too!" National Geographic photographer Gerd Ludwig said of the 1999 David Alan Harvey shot.

According to Ludwig, the combination of action set against an undisturbed background captures the essence of the location while illustrating "the simple joy of children."
