Around 1880, children wearing Schwdlmer Tracht, a type of traditional folk dress found in the German state of Hesse, pose in a field with white ducks.

"This is an old picture that's been heavily retouched," photography expert Gerd Ludwig said. "It reminds me of children out of fairy stories."

In December 1999 National Geographic magazine published Ludwig's photographs to accompany an article about 19th-century fairy tale archivists the Brothers Grimm. To represent Little Red Riding Hood, "I photographed a girl dressed up like this in a dark mantle picking flowers," he said.
