A lone snorkeler makes waves in a pond in the Cuatro Ciinegas Natural Protected Area, a 500-square-mile (1,300-square-kilometer) region of freshwater lakes, pools, and marshes in Mexico's Chihuahuan Desert.

"The snorkeler is in a magic world of his own," photography expert Gerd Ludwig said of the 1995 image by George Grall. "There's a certain tension between his being nearly unaware of the beauty around him and concentrating on what might be a stronger beauty below."
