Manhattan appears as clearly as in any map in this photo taken by astronaut Leroy Chiao from the International Space Station.

Flying over the Earth at five miles a second (eight kilometers a second), Chiao need to perfect his technique in order to take such a detailed picture.

"Since the Earth is moving past at 17,500 miles an hour [28,000 kilometers an hour], one must pan the camera as the shutter is released," Chiao said. "Otherwise the image will smear and appear out of focus."
