Seriously injured, four-year-old Waqas Ahmed sits outside a medical center in Muzaffarabad, the hard-hit capital of Pakistan-administered Kashmir on October 11. Ahmed lost a sister and brother during the October 8 earthquake. He has not spoken since.

Children made up a large proportion of the victims, many of them buried, like Ahmed's siblings, by collapsed school buildings. "It is a whole generation that has been lost in the worst affected areas," Pakistani military spokesperson Major General Shaukat told the Agence France-Presse news agency. "The maximum number affected was schoolchildren."
