Swiss Cheese Maker Hews to Centuries-Old Tradition

Swiss Dairy Cows Graze on Hillside
    1 of 5   Next >>
Swiss dairy cows graze on a mountain slope above the village of Pontresina. The Engadine Valley and the town of St. Moritz appear in the distance.

Master craftsman Hansj|rg W|thrich makes cheese in Pontresina. He gets milk from the herds of four local farmers, who bring their cows to the mountains in the summer to graze under his care. W|thrich makes cheese only from mid-June through September while the cows feed on the alpine slopes and are available to milk.
