Sea smoke, sea ice, and icicles surround a ship in the Bering Sea, Alaska. Large sheets of ice, called floes, sometimes threaten to lock in ships and even sea-faring animals.

Floating masses of ice called pack ice can cover up to 5 percent of the northern oceans during the winter, though global warming appears to be rapidly increasing the melting rate of the Arctic ice.
