Explorer Robert Peary in the Arctic, observing tides for the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey during a North Pole expedition.

Peary is usually credited as being the leader of the first expedition to reach the North Pole. Peary entered the U.S. Navy in 1881 and remained in the service until retirement, taking periods of leave for Arctic exploration throughout his career.
