Xu Xing is the lead author of the paper about the new dinosaur, which was published in the science journal Nature.

Xu—a paleontologist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing—has received a number of National Geographic Society grants over the years. Discoveries resulting from these grants include a "weird" bucktoothed dino, a four-winged dino, an ancestor of crocodilians, and a dog-size horned dino.

Xu Xing's research is supported by the National Geographic Society's Committee for Research and Exploration.
