Zhou Zhonge of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing is one of the lead authors of the research paper on the newfound bird embryo fossil published in Science. He received a grant from the National Geographic Committee for Research and Exploration (CRE) for research on fossil birds and associated birdlike dinosaurs in Mongolia in 1998.

Zhou is shown with Melinda Zeder, a member of the CRE, during a recent CRE visit to China. Zeder is an archaeologist with the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.
