North Facade

Inspired by rock formations—as well as the stone and masonry work of Chaco Canyon, Machu Picchu, and other Indian sites—the five-story building is wrapped in rippling bands of rough limestone.

Given the almost total lack of straight lines and angles, achieving the timeless look took up-to-the-minute techniques. "This was like building a space shuttle versus building a go-cart," as an executive at the museum's main construction company was quoted by the Washington Post.
