Arnold Becker (left) was foreign-born, but experts do not know exactly where he was from. Becker was in charge of operating the air circulation system that enabled the crew to breathe on the H.L. Hunley. George Dixon (right) was the Hunleys commander. He was in charge of navigating the submarine and firing the explosive weapon. The National Geographic Expeditions Council helped fund the raising of the Hunley and the analysis of the materials found inside.
