Nationalgeographic.com has been nominated for Webby Awards in three categories. The 2004 awards will be presented by peer-judges on May 12, 2004.
Nationalgeographic.com's three nominees this year are:
National Geographic Online Edition (Print and Zines category)
Nationalgeographic.com Education (Education category)
National Geographic News (News category)
"This is a tremendous achievement and means a lot to the talented professionals across National Geographic, who work very hard to deliver a first-rate Web experience that allows consumers, educators, and students to explore the world from their desktops," said Chris McAndrews, senior vice president and general manager of nationalgeographic.com, in a news release.
"The recognition of nationalgeographic.com News this year is especially gratifying, as it highlights the in-depth, unique reporting from around the globe that has made News one of the most popular areas of nationalgeographic.com."
The Webbys are often said to be to the Web what the Oscars are to the film industry, the Grammys to the recording industry, and the Emmys to the television industry. They are awarded each year by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences to individual and consumer Web sites in 30 categories.
The nominees and winners for the awards are selected by the academy, an international organization of nearly 500 industry experts, advocates, and visionaries working to advance the creative, technical, and professional progress of the Internet and evolving forms of interactive media.
The purposes of the academy are to recognize and acknowledge excellence in interactive content across emerging technologies; to connect a diverse group of luminaries to facilitate growth and development in the digital arts and sciences; and to educate industry professionals and the public about what is relevant, making technology accessible and integrating it into the general culture.
In addition to the peer-judged awards, the academy also gives the People's Voice Awards. The People's Voice Award winners are determined by votes cast by visitors to the Webby Awards site. The public has until May 7 to cast votes for their favorite Web sites at the People's Voice site.
Over the years nationalgeographic.com has won two Webby Awards, one each in the categories of science and education. The Web site also earned the Peoples Voice Award in the education category in 2001.
