On the Six-Cornered Snowflake, published in 1611 by German astronomer Johannes Kepler, was the first scientific reference to snow crystals, commonly known as snowflakes. This photograph, from the 2003 book The Snowflake: Winter's Secret Beauty, is of a considerably more recent vintage.
