Dehorning is standard practice on western cattle ranches. The dehorning instrument, the scoop, is used to reduce sharp horns to blunt stumps. This prevents shipping injuries and keeps cattle from gouging cowboys. After the procedure, a cowboy will apply antibacterial ointment.
