Pot sherds and stone tools litter an archaeological site near Tell Afar in northern Iraq. Tell Afar, an area with a series of cities reaching back to the fourth millennium B.C., was the site where team member Tony Wilkinson of the University of Chicagos Oriental Institute worked until 1990. Wilkinson returned to the site on the National Geographic expedition to find pottery that he had documented spread across the ground.
