Traveler Editor: SARS Travel Fears Unfounded

Will airlines let you reschedule trips because of SARS?

It depends on the airline. Some, like United Airlines, will let you reschedule your trip without a fee—but not cancel it. SARS has had a more significant effect on the airline industry than 9/11 and the war in Iraq combined. So it's incumbent upon the airlines to be flexible. Hotels and car rental companies, on the other hand, are being less flexible because they're not as vulnerable as the airlines are.

Why go to Toronto or Hong Kong right now?

That's where the deals are. For example, you can get a room at the International Plaza Hotel in Toronto for U.S. $15 per night right now. And in the next few months we're going to see even more airline deals, hotel deals, and other specials, and not just in Hong Kong and Toronto. Other parts of Asia are also starting to announce major deals. Thailand, for example, just released a "Thailand Smiles Plus" promotion. Through July 31, you'll get one free night for every night that you stay at a local hotel. You'll also encounter fewer crowds. Toronto will be the real deal. The Canadian dollar is weaker than the American dollar. And it' s so close it's virtually a domestic getaway.
