This snake-necked turtle has nearly disappeared from areas of former occurence, and a species recovery plan is urgently required. It is restricted to an area of occupancy of less than 100 square kilometers (39 square miles) on the small island of Roti, Indonesia. In less than ten years it has rapidly reached commercial extinction due to overcollection for the international pet trade.
