This headquarters at Bowdoin Bay, in northern Greenland, provided refuge during the 1893-1895 expeditions. After Peary’s second trek across Greenland in 1895, he proved it to be an island but returned after three months with only one surviving sled dog. In two other attempts to reach the Pole, Peary broke his leg and lost eight toes to frostbite.
