Hundreds of passengers disembark to stretch their legs when their river barge reaches Malaku, the last stop before the Democratic Republic of Congo's capital, Kinshasa. After traveling without shelter for as long as a monthcrowded together with their belongings, livestock, furniture, and wares for salesome passengers are so fed up with the voyage that they travel the final leg to Kinshasa by road.

On February 28, 2002, nearly 100 of the world's top photojournalists participated in a historic, one-day documentary of the African continent. Their results are available in a new book titled A Day in the Life of Africa. All publishing profits will go to AIDS education programs in Africa.
