This man died in Pompeii, Italy, almost 2,000 years ago. An earthquake in A.D. 62, followed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79, destroyed the city. Lava flows from Mount Vesuvius petrified this man's body, preserving it in a mummified state.
