For any of the countries in the Middle East it's wise to get a guide, not so much because you're going to be safer or to find the best restaurant or whatever, but it's the way to get deeper into the culture. There are an increasing number of travel agents that are becoming experts in a particular area, and the American Society of Travel Agents can give you recommendations of agencies specializing in countries or regions.

Will Middle East tourism make a comeback?

Once Americans feel that they are not targeted, the traffic from America will increase. But you have to look at the rest of the world; America doesn't drive the tourism industry. There are lots of other countries—like China—traveling. It's hard to predict what other cultures think of the situation in the Middle East. But if they think Americans are particularly targeted, they might take advantage of the fact Americans aren't around, and pick now to visit.
