Bredar said the Hillary group had been trapped by the wind at an altitude of a little over 26,000 feet (8,500 meters) on Saturday. "They waited for the wind to die down in the hope that they would get a very small window to climb the last bit—but the opportunity never came.

"They decided to return to Base Camp so they can juice up for the next attempt," Bredar said.
