Pictures: What a Spark of Genius Looks Like

Members of National Geographic's Your Shot community show where they get their inspiration.

Transformational ideas can come from anywhere. From anyone. National Geographic"s Chasing Genius is now soliciting ideas around three issues: sustainable planet, global health, and feeding 9 billion. Could your solution be a spark of genius? Check out the challenge, where the best ideas for improving our world each can win $25,000.

Inspiration takes many forms, but can be hard to visualize. How do you capture that moment, or that figure—the one that pushes us to pursue our ambitious and reconsider what's possible?

National Geographic's Your Shot community was challenged to do just that, and they delivered beautifully. From mind-expanding landscapes to scenes of curiosity and perseverance, more than 7,000 images submitted to the "Spark of Genius" assignment touched off a discussion about what inspires us in mind and spirit.

"I'm beyond thrilled with how our community stepped up to the challenge," says Your Shot producer Matt Adams, who curated the assignment’s final story. "As you demonstrated with your photographs, inspiration can come from many different places."

If these images leave you feeling inspired, be sure to share your idea for improving the world at Chasing Genius, where submissions are open through July 31.

These photos were submitted to Your Shot. Check out the website, where you can share photos, take part in assignments, lend your voice to stories, and connect with fellow photographers from around the globe.
